24th March 2011Web Video News: England Rugby Video Celebrates Grand Slam They Didn’t Win!

A fascinating web video emerged this week showing England rugby players celebrating a grand slam victory, which … erm … they didn’t win.

The web video was created before England’s loss to Ireland on Sunday and was leaked onto the Internet this week by an unknown source.

Made by sponsors Nike and an unknown video production company, the web video features players including Toby Flood, Chris Ashton, Bed Foden and Mark Cueto.

 A Nike spokesman said:

'We commissioned a celebration T-shirt and a video featuring the players, as we obviously need to plan ahead. It's unfortunate that this email has been leaked, and perhaps the lesson is to be less optimistic in our internal communications.'

Well quite.

23rd March 2011Web Video News: Zappos Increase Sales With Web Video Marketing

It’s no secret that web video has become an increasingly powerful weapon in the online marketer's armoury.

In the last few years, Amazon-owned online retail company Zappos has produced a staggering 58,000 short videos, mostly presented by their staff members. What’s more, they’ve found that when a product includes a video explanation, purchases rise and returns decrease. The perfect result!

The web videos feature the ranges of shoes, clothing and bags that the company has on offer; and the concept is for the employees to show a product they like personally and to show off its features.

This approach has clearly been a success and it's surely only a matter of time before many other companies adopt the technique and use video production for business success.

Have a look at a Zappos review video below:

22nd March 2011Web Video News; Peter Ford Joins Spectrecom’s Creative Team

Spectrecom’s inhouse film and web video production team expanded this week with the introduction of director, camera-operator and editor, Peter Ford.

Peter’s life as a shooter started at around the age of ten, when his BBC-employed father brought him into the news studios to help man a pedestal camera during some routine power tests.

After operating on tip toes, and peering into viewfinder, Peter soon realised that this was the direction his future was going to go.

To achieve a broader range of skills Peter chose not to pursue a media related degree, and instead studied English at university - skills which now find their way into script editing, or writing articles for broadcast magazines.

After completing his degree, Peter went on to become a trainee cameraman, where he worked and trained as hard as possible. After working as a junior camera op, he soon moved into freelance roles, working on a variety of productions - from documentaries, films, music videos, commercials and news. Peter is a trained steadicam-op, lighting cameraman / director; and  also works on the post-production side as an editor and motion graphic designer. A very welcome very addition to Spectrecom quickly expanding team.

To Peter, “there isn’t an ‘outside of work’”, which explains why he’s an avid film fan and likes to shoot his own films and documentaries in his spare time.

Doing steadicam work requires Peter to keep up his strength up, so he also does a lot of mountain biking and hope to complete the London to Brighton bike ride next year.

Take a look at some of Peter’s previous work here. It’s a 'behind the scenes' documentary showing what went on at a Pistonheads photography session - where keen PHers learn about car photography at LAT's purpose built studio. Both amateurs and pro photographers learn from the experts on how to light and shoot a dramatic matte black Mercedes, as well as getting a chance to get their own cars in the studio.

22nd March 2011Web Video News; Orabrush Web Video Marketing Case Study

Web video production has become an integral element of many businesses marketing strategies the world over. Success however, is never guaranteed.

Posting a boring, dry corporate video to Youtube about your business and just hoping for the best, will rarely - if ever - achieve the results you desire. Sure, there are exceptions to this rule, single one-off videos which go viral unexpectedly and bring the creator fantastic instant results, but for long-term gain, you need to build an audience for your web videos over time.

The Old Spice or Blendtec web video campaigns have both enjoyed fantastic success of late by taking this approach; and so have the web video produced for and by Orabrush. Since launching their Youtube Channel Orabrush’s sales volume in stores is now comparable to premium toothbrush sales. A few years ago it was a struggling one-man band.

This video, for example, has now been veiwed over 13 million times and a staggering 19% of those viewers visited Orabrush's website afterwards. That is a LOT of sales leads.

Orabrush grew its own YouTube strategy organically – testing and learning from its mistakes as the campaign progressed. Click here to learn more about the web video campaign and how they did it.

Here at Spectrecom, we specialise in the production of quality, affordable web video; and enjoyed a good degree of web video viral success.

Our creative team, for example recently produced a student recruitment video for Kings College London that went viral within a matter of hours. Since Feb 7th, it has been shared over 2000 times on Facebook, received nearly 25,000 views on Facebook and has even  been covered by the Guardian and Times Online.
