Initially studying photography, art and graphic design, Matthew first worked as a creative in advertising. It was here he was given the freedom to explore his passion for both design and photography on numerous campaigns, notably for Nike, Mercedes, The Body Shop and Barnados amongst others. A fascination with film and a desire to pursue further creative challenges, Matthew left advertising in 2001 to re-train as a director of photography, studying part time at the NFTS and part time shooting and often directing documentaries for the Discovery Channel, UKTV, US network Voom and the United Nations / Bill Gates Foundation.
Matthew has since travelled extensively, working as a DP on a diverse range of project types, from promos, commercial and content with high-end talent such as Paloma Faith, The Vamps, Jessica Ennis, Daniel Craig, Will.i.am, Tom Hardy and Judi Dench to critically acclaimed documentary for both BBC and ITV with One Direction, to feature documentaries such as the hugely successful Lionsgate / Fulwell73 production ‘In The Hands of The Gods’ which had the biggest cinematic release for a UK made feature doc, and experimental Opera film, ‘The Answer to Everything’ which opened at the BFI before touring nationwide to critical acclaim in the national press. Matthew has also worked on numerous high profile charity projects such as the Invictus Games opening film for Prince Harry’s Invictus Trust, the Royal British Legion’s official poppy appeal single, and the memorable Greenpeace ‘Darkside’ campaign.
He has worked with brands such as Disney, McLaren, Kellogg’s, Land Rover, Sony, Playstation, Adidas to name a few. With a passion for narrative based work, Matthew has also shot a number of high-end drama based short form projects.
Over the course of the last 15 years, he has also developed strong relationships with a number of high-end production and award winning post production facilities and is constantly in touch with all the latest technological developments in film and media.
Matthew holds both UK and Canadian citizenship and passports.
