First it was Vin Diesel and his Fast and Furious crew ripping it up Rio, and now some REAL pop culture legends have unleashed their brand of automotive bedlam on the Brazilian streets – all in the good, good name of video marketing!
Forget the animated necrophilia that was ‘90s ‘revival’ Fender Bender 500 – the first and finest Hanna-Barbara cartoon racing saga was Wacky Races.
Originally airing in the 1960s, the show was subsequently revived through the magic of syndication – all so further generations of nascent speed demons could delight at the antics of the Ant Hill Mob, Penelope Pitstop and, of course, Dick Dastardly and his less-than-loyal sidekick, Muttley.
But that was then and this is now: Wacky Races has been conjured into live-action existence in aid of a new Brazilian commercial for Peugeot, and lo and behold, most of the old favourites are there.
In addition to those already mentioned, you also get the Slag Brothers, the Gruesome Twosome and Sergeant Blast and Private Meekly. Oh, and some smug bloke in a Peugeot.
It feels a bit like a test-reel-cum-pitch for a full-scale Wacky Races film as it does an effective commercial (especially the fairly heinous CG Muttley; the helicopter-tailed snickerer being given the Scooby-Doo/Garfield movie treatment), but it’s all carried off with a suitable degree of fun, as you can see for yourself below.
