As part of a recent video series for the University of Sussex, Spectrecom Films interviewed David Willetts MP, the then-Minister for Universities and Science. And with falling international student numbers such a hot topic, we asked for his opinion on what English universities need to be doing in order to keep attracting top overseas candidates.

It was back in April that it was revealed the number of international students enrolling at English universities had fallen for the first time in 29 years.

International student numbers remain very healthy at more than 300,000. But the drop has encouraged universities to look more closely at the all-round experience they are offering to those arriving here from overseas.

What’s for certain is that an international exchange of knowledge and ideas is one of the factors which help make English universities such world-leaders.

And the importance of maintaining that healthy reciprocal relationship was a point David Willetts was keen to emphasise when he spoke to us in what would prove to be one of his last interviews as Universities Minister.
