Given our own experience working with 30-plus UK universities over the years, one of the areas of video marketing in which we take the greatest interest is student recruitment. However the filmic conventions of the sector can be rather rigid, giving rise to numerous spoofs, including a new one created in aid of an upcoming animated blockbuster.
The caricature of the university film is that of an unfailingly sunny vibe; of smiling, aspirational model students; and of an overall portrait of a place as joyous and grumble-free as Toytown and Trumpton combined.
And that’s the sugar-coated image parodied in the latest teaser trailer for Monsters University, the upcoming prequel to Pixar’s prior hit Monsters Inc.
Set, as the title suggests, during the college days of MI’s main duo, bouncing buy-eye Mike (Billy Crystal) and walking carpet Sully (John Goodman), the trailer offers a dead-on recreation of the classic uni promo, right down to lines like “Where those who embrace their history… become those who create it.”

In the last year or so, the Spectrecom team has really noticed how more and more of our university clients are keen to try fresh creative approaches when it comes to their video marketing, in order to cut through the clichés and say something specific and distinctive about that institution and what it has to offer.
It’s something that we’re always keen to encourage, and it’s meant we’ve been involved in creatively exciting projects, such as the one below on behalf of the University of East London, which have also gone on to achieve great results for the client.
